Comprehension Strategies:
Before Reading Activity:
Have students complete a KWL chart on Amelia Earhart. You can see what information students already have on Earhart and see what information they are interested in receiving from the book or your instruction.
During Reading Activity:
- Have students participate in a fishbowl discussion about the challenges that Amelia Earhart and other women faced during the 1920s. How did these challenges effect them? How did they overcome these challenges? Why do you think they were faced with these challenges?
After Reading Activity:
Have students participate in a Booktalk about Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean. Students can discuss what they like/disliked about the book. What the format of the added to the story. And what they learned about Amelia Earhart from the book.
Writing Activity:
Have students write a newspaper article as if they were Grace. Have students included dialoug from Amelia Earhart as if they had interviewed her for the article.
